Hello, and welcome to HT (Hogwarts Times). Well, before you do anything you need to make an account, right? Right! So, here's how to go about it.
1. First off, you may only have one character per account, and you must post with the proper character. If you accidentally post with the wrong character (in IC threads only, of course), simply post again with the proper character and pm an admin or mod to delete the wrong post. --1a. Of course, this should go without saying, but please make sure to go back in to your profile after registering, to make your display name the first and last names of your character.
2. This should also go without saying, but please, when doing to sorting quiz, take it as your character, not yourself.
3. Please make sure to follow the registration rules, it'll save me a lot of headaches.
I'm currently the only admin, obviously. If HT gets a lot bigger (which wouldn't be that hard, granted, but meh) I'll obviously hire a staff and probably another admin. But, as I am currently the only one, everything will be a lot easier if everyone follows the IC rules for this site. (No, this does not mean that when I get a staff you can ignore these rules. ^^)
BE LITERATE. Yes, this is a literate site, so yes, I expect literacy out of my members. I'll go more in depth about literacy later on.
NO GODMODDING OR POWERPLAYING. The only characters you have any control over are your own. Keep that in mind, for any godmodding or powerplaying not rectified swiftly will be dealt with harshly. Also, no characters are invincible--keep that in mind too.
NO PERFECT CHARACTERS. No offense, Mary and Gary, but we hate you with a passion. Make an appearance and I shall personally shank you to pieces. No one is perfect, so kindly keep your disgusting, tainted, perfect selves away from here.
KEEP TRUE TO YOUR CHARACTERS. This is a very, very laid back site, at least from my point of view, given the fact that I don't require bios for acceptance. As all you need to do to join is post in the Sorting thread, I will expect a few things from you. Not just literacy, but when you're developing your character, don't decide to go in a completely different direction than you were originally. Have a personality for your character in mind, perhaps write a few key notes somewhere, and let the character development ensue, yes?
DON'T INTERRUPT THREADS. Please, this is common courtesy--if you see a thread that is tagged for a specific person or persons, keep out of it; if they had wanted you in the RP, you would have been invited. Also, if there's an Open thread that has been replied to already, drop the creator a PM to see if it's ok to join; it's only polite.
Ok, now here are the guidelines for the content of IC posts. Basically, this is the base literacy I expect to see in posts (and profiles, of course) here at HT.
TYPE AT LEAST TWO PARAGRAPHS. Yes, I expect members to pump out at least two good, developed paragraphs per post. A good, fleshed out paragraph, to me, is five to seven thought out, developed sentences. So, pop out two of those bad boys, and everyone will be happy!
I EXPECT TO SEE GOOD GRAMMAR AND PUNCTUATION. Yes, shockingly enough, part of being literate is exhibiting a good grasp of grammar and punctuation when you write. No, no one will jump down your throat if you make the occasional mistake, because we all do, but if you constantly mess up grammar and etc, someone will be liable to jump on you and beat your head in. ^.^ Just kidding, but please, pay at least a little attention when you write.
USE A SPELL CHECKER. All right, I know no one is perfect. Hell, I'm definitely not. But part of being literate is knowing how to spell. Hey, everyone has words they've got trouble with, but there are gazzilions of internet spell checkers and word processing programs with spell and grammar checks, so put them to good use, yeah?
RPING IS THIRD PERSON PAST TENSE. Yes, I expect all role playing posts to be written in third person, past tense format. No I's or me's, no present tense verbs, please. Some people (me included) occasionally incorporate some second person stuff into posts, so that's fine, as long as it's not too constant.
NO WALLS-OF-TEXT. Please, please, please refrain from that 'wall-of-text' format some people cling to. I don't know about everyone else out there, but reading stuff like that gives me headaches. The 'Enter' key was invented for a reason; use it well. *grin*()^.^()
KEEP IT CLEAN. All right, so it is widely known that Proboards is a PG 13 site (which, by the way, means that if you are under thirteen, and I find out, you're out of here), but I'm sure there's a little smut in all of us. If you have anything of a graphic nature, be it extreme violence or sexual acts, put [R] in the title. However, I do ask that sex threads be kept... tasteful. Thanks.
Ok, so now you know what I expect to see in character. Let's talk about good ol' OOC, hm?
RESPECT ALL STAFF MEMBERS. Yes, I do expect you all to respect your admins and mods; big surprise! I put a lot of work into this site to get it up and running, and all my mods will have their hands full too, I know, so we should get a little respect, don't you think? So please, don't fight us on any decisions we make; if you have an honest concern, by all means, bring it to us and we'll consider it. If you rant, expect to be ignored. If you have a problem with a mod, bring it to me. And if any of us find out you're trying to pit us against each other, you'll be bounced from the board and banned so fast your feet won't even touch the ground.
RESPECT ALL MEMBERS. Wow, *gaspshock*, not only do we want your respect, we want you to respect each other, too! Who would've thought?! Really, though, the only reason people come online to places like these is to have a good, fun time role playing; nobody wants to be harassed. If you have a problem with another member, go to a mod with it or take it off the board--nobody wants shit like that public. And please, if another member is harassing you, report them, and by the Goddess I'll make sure it stops.
NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER FLAME. EVER. Did that make it clear enough? I never, ever, ever *ad infinitum* want to see flaming on this board. Ever. Got it? If I see any flaming anywhere, it will result in instant suspension, if not outright ban. I have a zero-tolerance policy for that kind of shit.
NO BACK-SEAT DRIVING. All right, so I know you want to help, but please, leave the modding to the admins and mods, honestly. We will see to everything eventually, I promise, and if you see something wrong that we haven't noticed, tell one of us, but don't try to handle it on your own. That only makes our jobs harder.
HOW MANY EGGS DOES IT TAKE TO FILL A MANHOLE COVER? None, because bananas don't have bones. *wink*
